Secluded by the leafy, green lawns and the bustling city streets, turn the corner onto High Street and suddenly Bath Abbey rises into view before you. Looming above the busy streets, the huge abbey church is more than just an architectural highlight in Bath.

For more than twelve and a half centuries, a church in some form or another has stood on the site of Bath Abbey. In fact there have been two other notable churches before the Abbey itself was constructed between 1499 and 1616. The supremely elegant façade showcases stunning stained glass windows, flying buttresses and the abbey's most striking feature, Jacob's ladder.

Bath's Abbey has a motto, "where Earth and Heaven meet". After witnessing Jacob's ladder you will appreciate how true this sentiment is. The elaborate structure on the west front is said to be a design of dream of the Bishop Oliver King, features angels scurrying their way upwards to the heavens. Inside the abbey, you will be over-awed by the vast space, the stained glass windows (particularly the east window) and of course the magnificent fan vaulted ceiling.

If you are feeling rather energetic, a worthwhile mission would be to ascend the two hundred and two steps as part of the Tower Tour. Around forty-five minutes, this guided tour gives a unique understanding of the history of Bath Abbey and for your hard work you are rewarded with sumptuous, panoramic sights of the City of Bath.

Make sure to take in an enchanting organ recital that take place throughout the Spring and Summer months. During the festive period, a must for any visitor would be to stay for a magical carol concert performance.

A £2.50 abbey donation is greatly appreciated.
